Instagram Ditches Notes Feature

#61 Beyond The Brand
1. Instagram Ditches Notes Feature
2. Meta’s Creepy AI Bot Integration
3. LinkedIn’s New Calendly Integration

Well, well, well… looks like Instagram is finally acknowledging what we’ve all been thinking: the app has become more cluttered than my desk on a Monday morning.

They’ve just announced they’re removing the ability to add text notes to feed posts and Reels. Remember that feature? No? Exactly the point. 👀

Notes launched last July

Instagram launched notes for feed posts and Reels last July after seeing some success with notes in DMs (apparently they’re popular with the younger crowd). But in a refreshingly honest admission, IG chief Adam Mosseri has basically said “yeah, nobody was using this.”

In his words: “We know Instagram has become too complicated over the years, and one of the ways we want to address that is by being willing to turn off features that aren’t used by enough, or that many people.”

Translation: “We’ve been throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks, and this particular noodle slid right off.”

Why this matters

Does it though? If you’re like most of my clients, you probably didn’t even realize this feature existed, let alone use it in your content strategy.

The real story here isn’t about notes disappearing – it’s about Instagram’s admission that they’ve overcomplicated the app. As someone who helps business owners create strategic social media presences, I’m actually excited to see platforms scaling back rather than constantly adding more features you have to keep up with.

I was chatting with a client last week who was stressing about not using every single Instagram feature. “If I’m not using notes, am I missing out?” she asked. My response: “Have you ever made a purchasing decision based on someone’s use of Instagram notes?” Her sigh of relief was audible.

What can we learn from this?

Here’s your takeaway: Stop chasing every feature, and focus on what actually connects with your audience.

Instagram says they’ll “continue to explore ways to make Instagram fun and social” – which means more experiments are coming. But they’re also promising to cut features that don’t catch on, which suggests a (slightly) more streamlined future.

The best strategy remains focusing on quality content that resonates with your specific audience rather than spreading yourself thin trying to master every fleeting feature.

Notes will still be available in DMs, so if you’ve found that useful for engaging with potential clients, carry on. But for feed posts and Reels? One less thing to worry about.

Are you using any Instagram features that feel like a waste of time? Or have any actually surprised you with their effectiveness? Hit reply and let me know – I’m genuinely curious!
